( MEMES ) TEST DRIVE >> 005.

THE TEST DRIVE

Like it or not, you've been dragged from your world into
the sanctum. It's a pretty nice city, all things considered--sci-fi, high-tech, glamourous.... Except, of course, for the giant dome encircling it, and the threat of glitching, contaminated zombies at your door. Looks like humanity's built itself a fortress that looks suspiciously like a cage, too.

The object of this meme is to get people familiar with the world of the Sanctum, and to try to see if their characters would fit in a sci-fi utopia such as this. Here are your options:

1. Intro: Waking Up. Make your intro post, folks. You wake up in a strange place, and get a strange transmission to go with it. There's a pair of glasses connected to some sort of communications network, but otherwise not much else in the room with you. What are you going to do?

2. Environmental Glitching. Why the hell is it so hot inside the dome? Wasn't it just the perfect temperature yesterday?

3. Genetic Altering. What it says on the tin. Want a go? Want to suffer the side effects? Want to keep someone you love from getting something done?

4. Memory Glitch. Nobody seems to remember you. Literally. Not your housemates, not your coworkers, not your friends. It's like you never existed.

5. Military Training. Everyone's got to start somewhere. You're training the green folks, maybe you're one of the newcomers yourself. Maybe you haven't even touched a gun before in your life. Either way, you'd better start now.

6. Network Glitches. Strange messages are coming through the network, embedded in posts from other users. Beyond anonymous and completely untraceable, these posters claim that Bifrons has changed more about you than you know. It's suggested that you look into past dealings with Kilo to gain better understanding of what you're up against. Do you investigate?

7. Wildcard. Choose your own adventure or create a cocktail from the presented options! The choice is YOURS.

[Complete BS. That's exactly what CT thinks of the current situation. She's dripping with sweat, her skin feels like it's baking, and she really, really wants to hit a pool right about now. Ah, the pipe dreams of soldiers for whom leave is a rumor. She's been here, what, a week? And stuff is already going to hell in a handbasket.

She lifts up the front hem of her shirt slightly, leans over a bit, and dabs at her brow with the fabric. There's no relief, nowhere to go and no real alternative to simply frying along with everyone else.]

Is this normal, or is this a special "fuck you"?

It's pretty special.

[Carolina, for her part, hasn't stripped down entirely, but her jacket is slung over one shoulder and she's opted to wear a tank top with her jeans. She wipes her forehead with the back of one hand - not that it really helps.]

Just be glad you missed when the weather systems went on the fritz and buried everything in neck-deep snow.

[personal profile] ghostthatlingers 2014-09-29 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[She's had a week to get used to Connie's appearance, though it doesn't make it any less strange to be in the same place as her. She's avoiding looking at the other woman as she ties back her hair into a ponytail to get it out of the way.

If the dome's going to be this hot, then she's not going to worry much about shame and is clothed in something she would wear to the gym that can handle the sweat without being overbearing.]

Assholes can't keep their systems operational. Don't bother asking them why, they'll feed you some bullshit lines about how they care about our comfort and are working on it. [There might be the slightest hint of sarcasm at the end there. Just a little.]

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
If I had to pick, I'd stick with this. As long as it doesn't get worse, we'll be okay.

[CT is about two degrees away from starting to strip down from her t-shirt and track pants, because this is really not alright. Climate controls in here seem like a rumor and a joke, so she holds back a sigh of disapproval.]

It's not like we can relax and take a minute to tan.

[A whole week of awkward semi-avoidance. Great. Just what Connie always wanted. She thinks she did the right thing to this very day, thinks there's nothing wrong with how she went about things until the very end, when she got caught and got... well, killed. That message should have been enough to save her life, or so she thought. Tex tends to send 99% of logic and planning straight through the window, though.]

Oh yeah, they care. I can tell. Really hard workers in this place.

[She tries to be as breezy as possible, but it comes off as almost standoffish.]

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-09-29 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You should have been here for the blizzard. Actually- I think I miss the blizzard.

[ York's stripped down to shorts and praying for some kind of fucking breeze but nope. None is forthcoming. It's the worst kind of misery right here. He'd do something about it but he can't be bothered to sit up. Too much effort. ]

Please say we have beer left.
connecticut: (Default)

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really dressed for either one, that or this, and I'm guessing I can't find anything cooler to wear.

[CT fans herself a bit, knowing fully that it won't help, before leaning down and trying to roll her pants up above her knees. What a waste. If it gets worse, she has no problems stripping her shirt off, but if it comes to that, she's going to be annoyed. Having already soaked through what she's wearing, though, it's sounding better and better.]

Beer? If it's still cold, it's probably not going to be for long. You'll probably have to fight somebody for it.
ghostthatlingers: (Default)

[personal profile] ghostthatlingers 2014-09-29 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[She's trying now to make up for that mistake, although Tex stands by what she did. It's been done and over with for years now, from her perspective.

At least she can understand CT's current attitude - hatred for those in charge? She can relate to that.]

They put us to shame. Trying to get information from them is like pulling teeth, except you have nothing to show for it when you're done.
goddamngrenades: (this has got to stop)

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-09-29 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I got something that's not as heavy in the house.

[ But that's in the house.

Which means moving. Which he would! If she wants him to. The things he does for his friends. But seriously if she's going to bake anyway she may as well bake in something that's slightly more comfortable. Maybe he can drag a fan out too or something. ]

Nnn...all the technology in the future and they can't get the damn air conditioning to work. I think I'll take dealing with the zombies next time.

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Great. I love secrets.

[A massive lie, tinged with a bit of good-natured sarcasm. She hopes it opens some door or another, but she's not holding her breath.

Their situation, though, is fresh for CT, a week back yet somehow a lifetime away. She doesn't hold a grudge, but she regrets how things went down and hopes that Tex understands why she did what she did. On some level, she wants an acknowledgement of her tiny pyrrhic victory. But that's probably not going to get discussed during Roastfest, here.]

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Like water?

[She gives him a sideways look that says "way to be lazy", but there's not much judgement behind it. She can't blame him for taking it easy, though she herself can't seem to sit still. There's not an ounce of comfort or security here, and she's going to be on a slight edge until she settles in.]

AC is never going to stop breaking. Ever. It's natural selection at work or something.
goddamngrenades: (So you're saying it's impossible.)

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-09-29 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Comes out of the tap warm. Not hot, warm, but that doesn't do a damn thing. Icemaker's busted. No point in circulating air if the air you're moving around is hotter than hell. I meant. Clothing wise.

[ He flicks a hand at her and if he's moved that much he may as well stand, scraping the sweat from his forehead. ]

I think I have something in your size that won't be so awful.
ghostthatlingers: (Default)

[personal profile] ghostthatlingers 2014-09-29 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you'll love this place. [Sarcasm again and she glances upwards. Why did the weather have to be so screwed up? This might be the one time in her life she's considered a rain dance.]

Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll cause a thunderstorm in the next few minutes.
connecticut: (Default)

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe we'll have a wet t-shirt contest after that.

[Humor? Does humor work?]

[personal profile] ghostthatlingers 2014-09-29 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Only if it's with ice water. [And now, her mind is stuck on the image of ice. God, it sounds great right now.] Might just settle for a bathtub full of ice, instead.
connecticut: (Default)

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Water's water, but if the clothes are decent, I'll take those.

[Yeah, she's not prancing around scantily clad today. It's too hot to punch someone if they get stupid. It's kind of amusing that he's standing, and the whole thing pushes her into motion too, a little impatient shift of her weight from one foot to the other.]
connecticut: (Default)

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Count me in, if you're sharing.

[She could swim in the stuff, given the chance. Or even something just lukewarm would do. Anything cooler than the air would be a relief.]
ghostthatlingers: (Human 09)

[personal profile] ghostthatlingers 2014-09-29 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I might, at a premium. How much you willing to pay? By the cube. [Girl's gotta make money somehow. She's just going to lean against a wall and fan herself.]
goddamngrenades: (Who me?)

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-09-29 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Shorts and a tanktop. [ He waves a hand vaguely at the opaque sky as he walks inside to fetch the aforementioned clothing. It's HOTTER inside despite there being less light, why the fuck is that. It's awful is what it is. Awful. Bucket of sad, melty ice full of water and beer, clean clothes, and sweating like he's going to die later, York wanders back out and offers it to CT. Here's to hoping he didn't sweat on them too much. ]

Bathroom's first door on the left if you wanna change.
connecticut: (Default)

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not really sharing, but I get it.

[She shrugs, turning away and finding a place to take a seat against the same wall.]

Do people actually care about money here?
ghostthatlingers: (Human 17)

[personal profile] ghostthatlingers 2014-09-29 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[She sighs.] Yeah. How else do you pay for things here? They don't hand us everything and they sure don't want us having half of what we end up with.
connecticut: (Default)

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh, thank goodness. She puts both hands out to take them, looking at him with a grateful nod and a vague smile of relief. Even if they've been sweat upon, it's not like she isn't used to being kept in armor that is theoretically climate controlled but in practice... well, kind of hot regardless.]

Thanks. I wish there was something more practical for me to wear on a regular day. I'll figure that out later. Right now, I'm changing.

[And so she heads inside for a moment, finds the bathroom after a longing look at that melting ice, and relaxes for a moment before she swaps the clothing out. It's seems reasonable enough to lay her previous garments out to air a bit, so she does that, too, and returns to him with a warning.]

Alright, so if the bathroom stinks, it's just my shirt.
connecticut: (Default)

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It just seems kind of pointless to have money when you're stuck in a closed situation with zombies.

[Stretching.]

I don't know. I feels like it's ripe for a free for all.
ghostthatlingers: (Human 11)

[personal profile] ghostthatlingers 2014-09-29 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[She snorts.]

You'd think so. They seem to barely keep control of this place, especially in the poorest district where they don't bother.
connecticut: (Default)

[personal profile] connecticut 2014-09-29 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So if they don't bother, why do we? I'm not saying anarchy is the answer, but a level playing field might be nice.

[She knows all about the completely nonexistent concept of equal treatment, though, so she's not really convincing herself of anything.]

Pipe dreams. I'm new and hopeful.
