( MEMES ) TEST DRIVE >> 003.

THE TEST DRIVE

Like it or not, you've been dragged from your world into the sanctum. It's a pretty nice city, all things considered--sci-fi, high-tech, glamourous.... Except, of course, for the giant dome encircling it, and the threat of glitching, contaminated zombies at your door. Looks like humanity's built itself a fortress that looks suspiciously like a cage, too.

The object of this meme is to get people familiar with the world of the Sanctum, and to try to see if their characters would fit in a sci-fi utopia such as this. Here are your options:

1. Intro: Waking Up. Make your intro post, folks. You wake up in a strange place, and get a strange transmission to go with it. What are you going to do?

2. Failed Upgrade. One of your upgrades is more wrong than right. How will you cope? What exactly is different? Who will help?

3. Mission outside the dome. You've come under fire. The strange things are coming towards you. Luckily, you have your suit, your teammates, and a lot of firepower. Or are you stranded on your own, looking for someone to come to the rescue? Perhaps you're the rescuer.

4.Infected Something bit you. Now you're turning into them, and all you can hear is a high-pitched squealing in your head, like a frequency you just can't quite hear. Do you tell your loved ones, or do you wait? Do you trust your doctor?

5. Military training Everyone's got to start somewhere. You're training the green folks, maybe you're one of the newcomers yourself. Maybe you haven't even touched a gun before in your life. Either way, you'd better start now.

6. Chance encounter makin' my way downtown walking fast, faces pass--you get the point. You bump into someone! Shopping, or strolling in a park? Maybe just lunch in a cafe?

7. Glory to the Network! Network post. Text with general queries, say what you have to say to the entirety of the whole city.

8. Wildcard: Whatever you want. Mix and match, switch and swatch, make something else up entirely!

York got here... before you? [That doesn't sound right at all. Confused Church is really starting to not like this place.]

How the hell did that happen? Did he leave you with Carolina or something?

We believed Agent Carolina was dead. Additionally, I was active for over a year in our timeline without York before awakening in a human body here.

[Delta sounds a little bit confused. Church already knew he was with South, didn't he? Unless he's getting South and Carolina confused, which...no.]

It is possible you are familiar with a different series of events.

Does Wonderfuck mean anything to you? [Please, Delta don't do this to him. This has to be a world change.]

I am afraid not. [Sorry, Church, but this is not the Delta you remember. Pretty much the same! Just. Not with several years worth of Paradisa memories or a crazy iPod child or...well, okay, maybe they're not exactly the same.

But he still knows you.]

[Nooo his Delta is in another castle... or well, somewhere far away from said castle grounds. Still.]

I have to find Tex... if she's here. Is there any way to find out if she arrived and just hasn't answered me yet?

Like a list or room assignments or something.

[An up-to-date list of residents? No, that would be Bifrons making life too easy on them. Not to mention he would have figured out North was here much earlier. Oops.]

There is not, to my knowledge, an easily-accessible listing. However, all new arrivals do appear at the main Bifrons Inc. building in much the same condition. If you believe they will appear soon, that is the most likely venue. Alternatively, you may leave a message on the network indicating they should contact you as soon as possble.

This place sucks, and what the hell are these... things they put in my back? Other than completely creepy.

Yes, I believe it 'counts'. It will remain archived on the network. However, you may certainly add to it if you desire to do so.

[He's not going to argue with 'this place sucks'. Sure, it has the one thing he's always wanted--York alive and more or less well--but the conditions are far from ideal. The dysthropes haven't made it inside the dome nor has he been forced to leave it yet, but there is something that tells him it's only a matter of time, and he's vastly unprepared in this human body they gave him.]

The ports have several unknown functions, primarily to do with hormone regulation and other biological matters. All natives to this city bear them, as do all of us brought here from elsewhere. Naturally, their full purpose and function is not clearly explained.

Right, because clearly explaining them would just be to damn convenient. You know, just once it'd be nice to get into a situation that was nice and straightforward. Just once.

[He gathers up the rest of the odd trinkets left on the table.]

Hey, do you know if there's anyplace nearby to get something to eat?

[Oh, Church. He may not be using video, but Delta is smiling a little at that. Some things never change.]

There are many restaurants within the city. If you have recently awakened, you will be near the Hub. Is there a particular variety of food you would like to consume? I will send a map to your glasses.

Anything but those Japanese snot-beans. Um, how about pizza or a sandwich oh, or a pizza-sandwich. What are those things called again... a Calzone.

Wait... do I need money? Do I have money?

New arrivals are given a small stipend, but you will eventually need a source of income. However, since it is your first day, I will buy if you would like to meet in person.

[And as requested, there's a ping to the glasses and a map to the nearest pizza-calzone joint.]

I have to get a job? Are you fucking serious?

Yeah, it'll be like oldish times... kinda... well, for me anyway. See you there.

It is a standard societal procedure.

[He's even been to the Job Fair! Not that he and York can't acquire anything they need without using strictly legal means, but it helps appearances if one of them has a real job. Right?]

I may require further clarification, if you do not mind.

[Nevertheless, he hops a taxi and it only takes him about twenty minutes to get to the restaurant in question. He's not really sure he'll recognize Church, so he hesitates as he enters the darkened pizza parlor.]

[He rolls his eyes, yay a job. Hopefully this world change doesn't last that long.]

We can talk all about it.

[Fortunately he recognized Delta. Church looks up from the menu with a small grin and waived.]

Delta... over here.

[Delta looks surprised at the recognition, but - hmm. Take away a few decades and that could in fact be Leonard Church. He nods and heads over to take a seat and a menu of his own, though he doesn't look at it just yet.]

My apologies for the delay. Hello, Church. You look well.

What'd you do walk? [He shrugs and decides to start over. Sorry Delta.] How's humanity treating you?

Only partway. The city is quite large and takes several hours to traverse from one end to another.

[As for humanity, he shrugs and looks down at the menu, looking for something York would recommend.]

It is difficult. However, with York's help, I am adjusting.

[That brings up an interesting question, though.]

And yourself?

Well, I've been snatched, surgically altered and now I'm stuck in space zombie land for who knows how long... other than that, I guess it's fine.

[Other than still occasionally having trouble sleeping, he's gotten pretty used to it. Granted, he started out with the delusion of humanity which helped.]

[True. And Church is only one step removed from humanity, while Delta is two; it does make a difference. He nods.]

I am glad to hear it. I have only en here a short time; however, I find that it is possible to make a living here. I hope I will be able to assist you in adjusting to the environment.

As long as you avoid death by space zombie... [He smirks]

York says I am not allowed outside the walls, whether or not we are consideered 'immune'.

[Because you know what else Delta is now? Very squishy, and it makes York very, very paranoid. He states is as a fact, though, not something he's particularly upset about. Who wants to go into danger anyway?]

Thank you, Church. Now, have you decided on food?

[He nods slightly. It makes sense that York wouldn't let Delta out where he could be killed or infected.]

I'm not sure if I want the meat one or the everything one. What do you think? Any preference?

[It's also fortunate that Delta's practical enough to see why, rather than being offended at being treated like a child. But he'd never been the one to seek out combat - if he did leave the dome, it would be to help keep York safe.]

I believe I will try the spinach feta variety. I find the "everything" combination may have pieces I do not like. [And it's hard to tell what they are when it's all mixed together. So far the only food Delta has reliably found that he can't take is anything spicy.]

[Without thinking on it, Church orders the meat lovers. Saves him from having to pick out the mushrooms anyway.]

So, what kind of job do you have here?

[what does a former spec ops AI do for employment in a place like this? Church can't help but be curious what kind of job Delta would pick for himself.]
