( MEMES ) TEST DRIVE >> 005.

THE TEST DRIVE

Like it or not, you've been dragged from your world into
the sanctum. It's a pretty nice city, all things considered--sci-fi, high-tech, glamourous.... Except, of course, for the giant dome encircling it, and the threat of glitching, contaminated zombies at your door. Looks like humanity's built itself a fortress that looks suspiciously like a cage, too.

The object of this meme is to get people familiar with the world of the Sanctum, and to try to see if their characters would fit in a sci-fi utopia such as this. Here are your options:

1. Intro: Waking Up. Make your intro post, folks. You wake up in a strange place, and get a strange transmission to go with it. There's a pair of glasses connected to some sort of communications network, but otherwise not much else in the room with you. What are you going to do?

2. Environmental Glitching. Why the hell is it so hot inside the dome? Wasn't it just the perfect temperature yesterday?

3. Genetic Altering. What it says on the tin. Want a go? Want to suffer the side effects? Want to keep someone you love from getting something done?

4. Memory Glitch. Nobody seems to remember you. Literally. Not your housemates, not your coworkers, not your friends. It's like you never existed.

5. Military Training. Everyone's got to start somewhere. You're training the green folks, maybe you're one of the newcomers yourself. Maybe you haven't even touched a gun before in your life. Either way, you'd better start now.

6. Network Glitches. Strange messages are coming through the network, embedded in posts from other users. Beyond anonymous and completely untraceable, these posters claim that Bifrons has changed more about you than you know. It's suggested that you look into past dealings with Kilo to gain better understanding of what you're up against. Do you investigate?

7. Wildcard. Choose your own adventure or create a cocktail from the presented options! The choice is YOURS.

Catherine Halsey | Halo | 3

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-23 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Catherine stares at her hands for a few moments, speechless, shocked somehow into silence by the choice she'd made. They had given her this; no, she'd subjected herself to it for reasons she doesn't currently care to explain to anyone.

Genetic modifications. Enhancements. Her own personal project's goals and methods turned back on her, in some ways. She is different now, and different is... strange. Perhaps awful, perhaps enlightening. She isn't sure. But now all she has to do is touch someone, and they'll be smarter, more adept with machines and technology, filled to bursting with knowledge and the capacity to learn. They can become, as she is, an utter genius.

Why she chose this gift is a secret, too, but she's asked someone to meet her to see how it works. That person is you. Before her is an arm of sorts--artificial, mechanical, and broken.]

[personal profile] deardirect0r 2014-10-23 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Dr. Halsey. I have to admit, I'm intrigued. [He looks from her to the arm and back.] But what is it exactly you hope to accomplish?
coffeebeforescience: (Default)

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-24 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing of consequence, other than testing a theory or two. I'm not sure you're the ideal candidate, even if you are the most... stunningly ironic one.

[Calmly, she removes her jacket and begins to roll up her sleeve slightly.]
deardirect0r: (smile)

[personal profile] deardirect0r 2014-10-24 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, any good experiment needs to test under less than ideal conditions as well as ideal. Though, I'm loath to think of myself as less than ideal... I suppose I can live with ironic.

WRONG JOURNAL SORRY :C

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-24 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Irony isn't the point. You're a safe person to consult with when it comes to this, and I think you'll be quite satisfied with the result. Give me an ounce of trust and you won't regret it in the slightest.
deardirect0r: (pic#8380374)

No worries. Sorry about the late response.

[personal profile] deardirect0r 2014-10-26 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose I must have an ounce left somewhere. [Trust was a rare commodity.] What do you need me to do?
coffeebeforescience: (pic#6894172)

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-26 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
One ounce, Dr. Church.

[Moving close, she points at the detached, damaged upgrade on the table.]

Tell me what you see, what you can ascertain from a simple look at it.

[personal profile] deardirect0r 2014-10-27 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
It seems to be a fairly standard mechanical replacement, nothing at first glance stands out as particularly extraordinary. There's some significant damage to the wiring and servos, especially at the area of attachment and the joints of the elbow and wrist.

Anything more would require a closer examination.
goddamngrenades: (Project Freelancer = Futility)

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-10-24 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Okay I'm not sure how you got my name or what we're doing here but...

[ He waves a hand at the upgrade. ]

What're we doing here?

WRONG JOURNAL SORRY

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-24 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
A random selection, but you should be grateful enough that you're here. You'll be doing your part in advancing the causes we fight for.

[She points at the mechanical arm on the table.]

Please examine this first. Tell me what you know about it already.
goddamngrenades: (woah wat was that)

SOKAY it happens

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-10-25 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Alright then.

[ He glances down at the arm, picking apart the details. ]

A detached upgrade, one of the more recent civilian models without the synthskin they usually put on it so- labor model? Wiring looks fried and some of the joints look weird but. That's about it.
coffeebeforescience: (pic#6842114)

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-26 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[She nods, moving quite close. He's hit the high points. Now it's her turn. Smoothly, she slides a small box toward him.]

Very good. Have you ever worked on one of these upgrades?
goddamngrenades: (Project Freelancer = Futility)

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-10-26 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. No once. I'm a locksmith and encryptionist, mechanics like this aren't really my bag. Maintenance, the basic stuff, maybe. But fixing this? I got nothing.
coffeebeforescience: (Default)

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-27 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Good. I hope you enjoy learning new skills. Your dexterity--mental and presumably physical--from picking locks should prove beneficial here, as well.

[She raises a hand slightly.]

The experiment is this. I teach, you implement the teachings.
goddamngrenades: (I could throw it out)

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-10-27 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
...Depends on where you're putting that hand.

[ Not that he doesn't roll out his shoulders and tug the box closer. Tools? Probably. He can use them. ]

Teach away.
coffeebeforescience: (pic#6894171)

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-27 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Your arm.

[She puts out her hand, then, palm down, as though she's going to grab his arm, which she will if it's presented.]

We're going to repair that prosthetic.
goddamngrenades: (i'm lost)

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-10-27 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
And holding my arm is gonna help with that...how?

[ Still he rolls up his sleeve because it seems like the thing to do and, well. Offers his arm. Weirder shit has happened. ]

You know I got a mechanic that can do this on his own, right?
coffeebeforescience: (pic#6894170)

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Do I look like I actually care?

[Catherine's low tolerance for stupidity notwithstanding, she doesn't want to lay out her trump card until she's sure it will work. It's her time honored tradition of examining briefly but with as much depth as possible before basically saying "screw it" and pushing buttons until something happens.

She touches her fingers lightly to his skin, and waits. Her skills, her mechanical aptitude, her knowledge of this item will, in short order, benefit him as well.]

There's a piston in the center. Remove it and recalibrate it.

[Without pointing or indicating other than what she has done, she merely thinks about its structure and the process and waits to see what fragment of it he gets. Aptitude transference.]
goddamngrenades: (Project Freelancer = Futility)

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-10-27 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Not a lick.

[ Still. Fine. Whatever. Grabs the tools and peers down, bionic eye whirring in it's socket to magnify whatever it is she wants him to do. The fingers on his arm are a little weird but, okay. He can work through it. Piston.

Piston, piston, piston. There it is but it's attached to a thing and calibrating something that isn't a lock hasn't ever been in his skillset but-

It's not entirely unlike Delta nudging the answer to him, that sudden sense of comprehension. What was a mass of wires and metal and gibberish slides into focus like a pair of glasses. His brain shakes out the fuzz and he goes tense under her hand knowing that's part of the reason why but-

Remove the piston. He can. Delicately, easily, he twists and finesses it out. ]

Okay that's pretty weird.
coffeebeforescience: (pic#6894180)

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-27 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Could it be that it actually works? That she wasn't just massively duped? Fascinating.]

Hmm.

[She seems thoughtful as she mulls over his performance, ignoring the edge of tiredness that washes over her. It hits her in a short wave, closing her eyes, and she frowns at that. There was always a price to be paid for convenience, but she will damn this place for inhibiting her utility.]

Alright. Which pieces of these most closely resemble human anatomical structures? Not the overall form, but the function of each. Tendons, muscles, bone. Which specific pieces?

[She nudges forth another bit of information, consciously this time, even as it kicks back another wave of weariness. Anatomy. She's a doctor. She's dealt with artificial limbs before.]
goddamngrenades: (I could throw it out)

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2014-10-27 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Not my area.

[ Even so he flicks his eyes back down to the arm and- understands what works how and what it's supposed to be on a human arm and that's. Weird. It is and isn't what he has with D. It is in that he's receiving some kind of comprehension, and isn't in so much that he's pretty sure he's not feeling her mind directly against his.

Thank god, that'd be creepy. ]

These rods here are the support struts- bone. The bound carbon mesh here, here, and here hold the fibrous bundles that function as muscle in place without sacrificing structural integrity.
soulofmagus: (May There Be Hope For Us Both)

[personal profile] soulofmagus 2014-10-24 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[ As a callsign, Sophia's schedule had grown far busier than she'd prefer, but she'd made a point to set aside time for this. One did not look such scientific generousity in the mouth.

Even if you did approach such offers with the caution due any experimental technology. ]

My apologies if I kept you waiting long, Dr Halsey. [Hands clasp before her, and there is a partial bow to the older scientist; an old Terra-Asian custom of greeting, rather than a business handshake] Dr. Sophia Nate, or Callsign Sierra, if you prefer.
coffeebeforescience: (Default)

[personal profile] coffeebeforescience 2014-10-24 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sierra. Did it have to be Sierra?

Catherine follows the custom, offing a small bow. Let it not be said that she is callous about cultural norms.]

I prefer Dr. Nate. You didn't keep me waiting. I just finished my own work.
soulofmagus: (Lady of Science)

[personal profile] soulofmagus 2014-10-27 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It isn't a custom native to Proles. That much, my good Catherine, you'll learn in due course.

The younger woman seems to relax at once, evidently someone who also prefers not to use 'Sierra' - not that she had any choice in the designation selection when made a callsign.
]

Very well, then. Tell me more about your proposal.
