( it isn't hard for her to imagine herself caught up in what he's describing-- her attention caught, investigating, getting mixed up in something because she's always been a 'run toward' rather than a 'run away', by nature. the plausibility of it; she can't dismiss this, the way she was very tempted to, initially. it aligns (but not neatly) what she'd already seen and observed, without quite being anything satisfying.

she sits down in the booth, presses her hands together and laces her fingers, maybe to keep them still. they're pianist's fingers, surgeon's fingers, and her hands are never anything but steady. )


How does a parade become a riot?
