He's actually relieved when he sees South. Sure, she's not his favourite person, especially recently, but Wash at least knows her. He'll take familiarity now, even if it comes with a price tag of South being, well, South. Maybe the anger should worry him more from the outset, but it's not like it's an unusual scenario.
Except as she gets closer and he notices the limp and gets a good look at her face, he realises that this is not South's common or garden anger towards the universe for making her have to breathe the same air as Carolina, this is directed specifically at him.
